From IICM
| The Intercultural Institute for Contextual Ministry, Inc. is the parent organization of various free-content projects, most notably the Missional Cyclopedia, the free online missional encyclopedia and the Missional Library, the free online missional file repository, and the Missional Corps, a free social networking site for missional believers; and various fee-based content projects, most notably the Missional Culturescape, a first-of-its-kind, mapping website featuring many datasets to further the missional movement (coming soon), the Missional Context, a major source for cutting edge community and congregational missional research, and the Missional Coach, a site for training missional mentors and connecting with them. |
What is the mission of the Intercultural Institute?
The mission of the Intercultural Institute for Contextual Ministry is to empower and engage evangelical, Christian believers in North America and beyond to collect and develop missional research, training and resources and to disseminate them effectively and globally in order to foster a grass-roots missional movement that impacts local communities in culturally-appropriate ways.
In collaboration with a growing network of members, the Institute will provide the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of missional projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Institute will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the Internet free (or donation-based), for registered, evangelical, Christian users.
Are you a charity?
The Intercultural Institute for Contextual Ministry, Inc. is a non-profit charitable corporation organized under the laws of South Carolina, USA and physically located in North Augusta, South Carolina, USA. IICM has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States.
The existence of the IICM Institute was officially incorporated by IICM founder, Dr. Curt Watke, on July 25, 2003.
Which projects do you support?
IICM supports the NeoTribal Cultures Project, a research endeavor to pin point specific neotribal cultural groups that still need to be reached with the gospel.
IICM supports the Missional Suite, a set of inter-related projects that provides the research, training, and resourcing needed to empower lay (and paid) missionaries to effectively reach their communities in culturally-appropriate ways.
More information may be found on the page about our projects.
How is the Institute run?
The Intercultural Institute has a paid and volunteer staff, led by the Executive Director, Dr. Curt Watke. The staff supports the emerging work of dozens of Missional Coaches, Missional Faculty and Missional Corps volunteers who contribute content to the IICM communities. It is also supported by volunteers participating through committees, as interns, or on an ad hoc basis.
The Board of Trustees articulates the mission and vision of the IICM Institute, reviews and helps to develop long term plans, provides oversight, and supports the IICM's fundraising efforts. It is the ultimate organizational authority of IICM as defined in its bylaws. The Board is partially elected from the community of contributors to the IICM projects.
We have one office, located in North Augusta, South Carolina (USA), from which our executive staff work. All other board members and staff work remotely from such places as Georgia, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, India, and the Middle East.
Who are the members of the IICM Board of Directors?
Biographies and terms of current board members can be found at the Board of Directors page.
The Executive Director and Board are also supported by an Advisory Board.

How does the Institute serve its mission?
There are several key ways:
The Institute provides the servers and hosting used to run our projects, along with all the associated domain names and trademarks. It keeps most of the projects free of charge and free of advertising. Donation-based projects exist where data or licensing expenses require the generation of associated revenue.
We develop learning resources, support workshops and strive to think intelligently about other ways to bring in new contributors, and to grow IICM as part of the missional movement.
We deliver free or donation-based missional knowledge, training, and resources.
We try to bring the educational content from IICM's projects to people in as many forms as possible. In particular, we want to help evangelical believers in disadvantaged communities with limited connectivity to access free missional materials, and to contribute to it.
We want all of our projects to become multilingual, therefore each project must be designed from the beginning to include the ability to expand across multiple languages.
In all this, we desire that God be glorified.
Where does the money come from to support your mission?
IICM is funded primarily through donations and program dollars of individuals, churches, denominational entities, and mission agencies (see the list of Missional Partners). Though small, individual donations have been lacking in the past, we expect with the launching of the missional suite their numbers will increase.
We are presently not considering advertising as a source of revenue.
The IICM Institute has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States. Donations made from other nations may also be tax deductible. See deductibility of donations for details.
Please see our fundraising page for details of making donations via PayPal or by postal mail. For all other types of donation, please contact Dr. Curt Watke at cwatke AT iicm.net.
Do you have financial statements?
Our financial statements have been handled by the CPA firm of Robert Oswald, CPA in North Augusta, SC and are compliant with generally accepted accounting principles.
